On a different note; the "Don't want to be too sadistic"-comment accompanied by Jesse from Breaking Bad really brings back some memories from those more "gore-y" episodes, haha!

Love that series!

CryEngine was originally developed for and by a German company so the built in gore related features are extremely limited due to the strict German gaming laws.

That's not to say we can't/won't but its not a simple matter of flicking a switch and suddenly you have arms flying around.

I didn't think it would be that simple, I just understand that some engines would probably be more friendly to implementing something like that than others. Knowing that Cry3 was made in Germany definitely brings some things to light.

Hi. I thought I'd drop in and give my own perspective on gore/blood/hits.

Since this is (from what I read) a realism game, I have some knowledge to throw out.

A bullet such as a 7.62x39mm round (SKS, AK-47) would have a big hit, but it would fragment and go out the other side leaving a hefty exit wound. Even more so for a .30-06 (BAR M1918, M1 Garand, Springfield M1903) and would still fragment. That's what does the most tissue damage. Also keep in mind that a majority of bullet-wounded people die from loss of blood and not the event of being hit by the bullet, thus the term "bleed out". If the person was hit in a critical spot such as the spine or the lower part of the brain they would most likely go down instantly.

Smaller rounds such as pistol cartriges (9x19mm, .45 ACP, .22 LR) would hit the target and most likely stop and not exit the body. But they usually don't fragment. That's why a lot of people live from being hit by two or more handgun shots, because the bullet didn't do enough tissue damage to make a difference. Hollowpoint rounds don't go very far into the body, but they expand and do more tissue damage because of the wider diameter.

Someone posted a Band of Brothers scene a page or two back (that show made me cry by the way) showing someone being hit and the puff of smoke coming out. Here's my understanding for that effect. The round fired was a .30-06 (7.62x63mm). The bullet would fragment and exit out the back. Realistically, the exiting of the bullet would show a short trail/stream of blood behind the bullet, but it would be small and thin. The puff of smoke is from the soldier's dirty clothing. When a person gets hit by a bullet, the shockwave would knock the dirt and dust off of the clothing, thus causing a small cloud of smoke. There would not be big splatters of blood because the clothing would block it.

I see that there could be some limitations in the effects area, but this can also help with the damage system.

Gore is always a very tough subject to address. I have seen that you have said that the Cry3 engine was designed for Germany and we all know that their gaming laws are beyond strict; however if it were possible to make the game Gory would it be possible to have an option with Gore on or off. Off would see a little blood but if it were possible (and I appreciate it might not be) then something more like a mix of RO2 and Band of Brothers Hells Highway would be fantastic. Yes it means the parting of limbs in explosions, but even DH managed to do that without it coming across too badly.

Certainly having it would make it more immersive but it will always be a controversial topic. Live Leak is a good place to go, there is also a host of websites out there with uncensored footage which can show you the effects that different calibre weapons will have on target. Explosions is where it really makes a difference though because it generally doesn't look very good when heavy ordinance drops onto a target and all you see is a small body, fully intact fly across the screen.

As far as I've seen, when a person gets shot, you really don't see much. You just see the clothes kinda wave.

Some real examples as reference material for the devs, should they want to make bullet impact realistic

In the last shot you can see a bit of blood/brain squirt out, I think.

Of course there's blood after the person gets shot, once he starts bleeding, but on bullet impact, you don't see much.

This is also a good reference for the "sack-of-potato"-effect one would experience when getting shot.

Oprah is spot on. As I said in a previous post, gore is not like the movies. Artillery might cause limbs to fly, bodies to fly, etc, but ordinary bullet deaths just cause the man to drop like a sack of potatoes with little blood until they actually starts bleeding on the ground.

Yeah I'm all for the sack of spuds approach - with a little cloud (dsut or blood) to indicate a hit - purely for the players use. Grenades might be troublesome however. Some may remove limbs - the rest just pepper the body with shrapnel.

Lets do it like this! Blood spray only on headshots, like "Oh you hit him to the head, here is a blood spray as a reward so you can be sure of the kill"

In my experience over the top gore ends up being more funny than horrifying in a video game. Screams of pain or crying usually have a more immediate effect.

Hi,

Just want to know what's new with gore in the game. You wrote about CryEngine doesn't allow that, but Ryse Son of Rome on Xbox One will be full of gore lol

Microsoft isn't under German law as a US-based company, but Crytek is a German one and thus under the strict German laws that comes with anything e-related. That's why Ryse supports "gore" and e.g Crysis doesn't.

But we'll see! There's nothing wrong with blood but ragdolls (the option to "play" with dead bodies) is a different story. We'll see what happens!

If I would pick between the two, I would rather have realistic death animations than gore.

IMO (as Naga said before) Band of Brothers was quite nice how they did it, perhaps TW will do the same route.

I like the idea of a puff of smoke... soldiers are dirty, and if you've ever gotten dirt on a coat you'd know that when you hit it, all the dirt and dust puffs out of it. But of course, variation is the key. Not every shot should result in a puff of smoke. Kinda gives you a bit of a thrill not knowing if you've hit someone as well.

As well as this, I'd like to see maybe a small sliver (or a puff) of blood get thrown out the back of the person you've just hit, though perhaps this should only happen if you hit them in the head or the heart. I don't think excessive gore is that necessary, though it would be nice to have. It's a immersive but not a game-breaker/maker. It's in RO2, but I don't really find myself immersed on the eastern front enough for it to be believable :p It's 'nice', though, to see a torso fly through the air after the arty has just landed.

Rag-dolls I would expect to appear in Traction Wars, doesn't make much sense that they wouldn't, unless it is due to development constraints.

hey guys, l think, its a good idea, to have some gore, in the game bia had, that after the, explosion they would remain, without

a leg, or a body for, some people, may be, (disgusting) but after all, as is but usual seems very, realistic in the, fight against, "your" "enemy" and it, makes you awful, at the, same time, as "you feel what it means" war!

I'd like for bodies to remain, but I don't really need chunks of meat flying all over the place like Unreal Tournament. Just don't go crazy and we should be fine.
