Welcome to the community TheBuG
Your new project sounds really interesting.
How far did you get on the WoW project out of interest? I never played the game but the story and world always intrigued me.
Not really far, I got a few areas done, but it's really both really easy and really hard to work with the worldbuilding tools for WoW.
My first build was a
Vrykul isle, the Vrykul are a humanoid race mostly based on Vikings. It got corrupted by the tools I used as a lot of them were outdated so anytime I would get close to it I would get fired into the air and die shortly after...
This was as close as I could get.
Now for a bit of explanation on why it looks quite bad.
WoW is a game which is made to work on all types of PCs, the high end ones aswell as the really bad ones. The mountains/rocks are mostly raised terrain with a rocky texture on them, it's used everywhere in WoW, so it fits the style but I personally don't really like it. Using doodads (objects) on the other hand will make the game extremely laggy.
There are also no flowers and no grass to be found anywhere on that particular map. WoW uses the so-called Groundeffect doodads to simulate grass. They're basically 2d models which are assigned to a texture layer and painted over the area you want. The third party tools lacked this function which made it really hard to add them.
And there are some other factors which made it quite hard to work with it. There's the problem that there's no converter or exporter for 3DS Max or Maya, or anything alike. There is a plugin for Blender but it lacks a lot of features and it's been a long while since I used blender.
There's also no real AI in WoW so if I wanted to spawn any creatures I would have to set up a private server which I really do not like.
So basically this is another reason why I moved to CryEngine.
Thirdly, every single object has to be added, placed, scaled and rotated by hand. Every tree and bush you see has cost me a shitload of time, sadly. This is one of the reasons I quit, I love warcraft, but it's just too much work. I don't mind placing the models in a village by hand, but having to do it in a rather large forest is a pain in the ass and a waste of time.
