• Welcome to the Vanguard Community

These forums date back to the game's origins as the Crysis mod Traction Wars. Over the years the game and internet habits have evolved and discord.gg/vanguardww2 is now the principle home of the community.

The team continue to read and reply to posts here, but we can be contacted more quickly on Discord.

Guess I have to introduce myself aswell. I've been following Traction Wars since it was announced for Crysis Wars so I've been around a while but never bothered to create an account.

Sooo, I'm TheBuG. o/

I'm 18 years old and living in the Netherlands. I've been a huge fan of WWII games for a long time, but I've been into worldbuilding aswell. I did quite some 3rd party worldbuilding for World of Warcraft (Yes, there are third party worldbuilding tools for it.) as I love warcraft's lore and hated the fact that so many areas and cities were left out. Sadly the tools were quite unprofessional and unstable, so I quit it after 2 years or so and never actually released anything but screenshots.

Recently (as in, a week ago or so) I've started working on CryEngine aswell, using reference photos of my holidays in France and putting them together into a build. I haven't really progressed yet as my job is kind of taking away most of my spare time, and then there's all the games I play. Might post a showoff some day ;). It's probably going to be based around WWII as I've pretty much seen every WWII museum in France and the first thing that pops into my mind when I think of France is D-day (well, and baguettes).

Anyway, good to be around.

Welcome to the community TheBuG :) Your new project sounds really interesting.

How far did you get on the WoW project out of interest? I never played the game but the story and world always intrigued me.

Not really far, I got a few areas done, but it's really both really easy and really hard to work with the worldbuilding tools for WoW.

My first build was a Vrykul isle, the Vrykul are a humanoid race mostly based on Vikings. It got corrupted by the tools I used as a lot of them were outdated so anytime I would get close to it I would get fired into the air and die shortly after... This was as close as I could get.

Now for a bit of explanation on why it looks quite bad.

WoW is a game which is made to work on all types of PCs, the high end ones aswell as the really bad ones. The mountains/rocks are mostly raised terrain with a rocky texture on them, it's used everywhere in WoW, so it fits the style but I personally don't really like it. Using doodads (objects) on the other hand will make the game extremely laggy.

There are also no flowers and no grass to be found anywhere on that particular map. WoW uses the so-called Groundeffect doodads to simulate grass. They're basically 2d models which are assigned to a texture layer and painted over the area you want. The third party tools lacked this function which made it really hard to add them.

And there are some other factors which made it quite hard to work with it. There's the problem that there's no converter or exporter for 3DS Max or Maya, or anything alike. There is a plugin for Blender but it lacks a lot of features and it's been a long while since I used blender.

There's also no real AI in WoW so if I wanted to spawn any creatures I would have to set up a private server which I really do not like.

So basically this is another reason why I moved to CryEngine.

Thirdly, every single object has to be added, placed, scaled and rotated by hand. Every tree and bush you see has cost me a shitload of time, sadly. This is one of the reasons I quit, I love warcraft, but it's just too much work. I don't mind placing the models in a village by hand, but having to do it in a rather large forest is a pain in the ass and a waste of time.

Wow that is time consuming. I imagine you quite like using the paint objects tool in CE3 after that experience!

The only disadvantage with working with an next-gen engine is sometimes things require reworking after part of the engine is changed. You may have found this already when the ToD editor depending when you started on CE3.

Hello, I'm Moody. I'm not moody, just got this name after Sgt. Moody from Call of Duty 1, and it's stuck ever since. Been following this for quite a while, finally decided to sign up and get into the community. I'm quite excited for a realism game on Cry3 that is not focusing on the U.S. for once (no offence intended, simply nice to have something fresh).

Right now I'm working 25 hours a week and spending the rest of my time trying to get into game audio. I'm not ready to apply, but in a few months I'm gonna see if I can get in with the dev team!

Welcome, Moody!

First off, I appreciate your contribution and questions in the other threads; it's nice to have the Community "spew-out" a few suggestions here and there, and it's nice to have something to discuss and reflect on as well. A few new ideas might pop-up from that, so thank you, and please keep them coming.

Out of interest, what kind of "game audio" are we talking? SFX, Composing etc. or?

Good-luck nonetheless, and nice to meet you!

Both. At the moment it's more about the composing because I don't have a compressor mic yet (saving up to buy one). I'm still pretty amateur (I'm not fully proficient with my composing software yet), but I decided to teach myself instead of going into debt with college, so I'll be making fast progress. When I have some sfx recorded I'll apply (if the position hasn't been filled).

Hey folks I'm Nate and I just saw this mod like a week or so ago and I have been checkin the site 4 times a day ever since. I am actually an aspiring music producer however the genre I produce is practically opposite to what people prolly listen to on this site. I have always had a fascination with WW2 and WW1 and recently I having been diggin into more books than I ever thought I would read.

Although I don't necessarily have the skills in making a video game I would love to help in any way possible.

If there is anything that the team could use help with I would love to lend my 4 years of audio and 12 years of musical experience. (However useless that may be)

Welcome, Nate!

Enjoy your stay, and please let the suggestions and contributions come forth!

What kind of music/musical experience do you got? Would it be Composing or perhaps SFX?

We're always looking for talented people to join us, and please don't hesitate on sending in an Application.

9 years of electric bass (Jazz funk and R&B). 2 years of bein an MC. 4 years of hip hop production but I also have done a lot with sampledella and RJD2 style stuff. My strength is in sampling though. I can do SFX in a limited sense but Music is the one thing I can actually put my mind to and learn pretty quickly. But yeah I'll send a application in and see if you guys have use for someone with my very specific set of skills.

Actually while taking a look at the requirments for SFX I think I need to practice this more so I should be applying in a month or two.

Not to worry, we won't disappear!

Looks like you got some wide variety there, Nate (though I guess all those genres can relate to one another some point in time, haha!).

If you want to check out the SFX, you should take a look at FMOD as that's the plugin/extension CE3 operates afters.

Good-luck!
