Well seeing as Star Citizen 2.0 has been released (and it's a fellow CRYENGINE game) it seemed like a good time for this to have it's own thread.

Trailer here:

Well they've raised a HUGE MIND-BOGGLING amount of money from crowd sourcing so people are suspicious about time to release and the scope they're promising.

Can't say I've followed it that closely. I couldn't resist a shiny ship though when they first asked for backers.

I think some people may think all ships have to be bought with real money post release - which as far as I know is nonsense. Apart from the exclusive ships in-game currency will buy ships like EVE.

Is it superior to Elite Dangerous? It seems so.

In scope and ambition I would say definitely.

I've played Elite & Dangerous but I struggled to get into it. Maybe I should the again when I get time and see if they've got a better newbie entry.

You missed one important part. It's Star Citizen Alpha 2.0. So basically after years of selling concept art (and yes, it is selling, despite them officially calling it "pledging"), they finally got their sh** together and started to actually work on the gigantic pile of stuff they promised. Not that I care, I'm sure this is gonna be a great game... In 2020., that is. (Actually I do care a little, seeing as they did manage to sell me their dream a few years ago)

I just wonder which will come out first TW or this 100 million dollar promise. xD

Well I know which one I'm betting on ;)

Seriously though I think some people should give the devs a bit of a break. They may be very well funded but a project of that sort of scale is going to take a long time and it can't help doing it under a microscope from Day 0.

I'll reserve judgement until they've finished it. I do hope I can take a small freighter with a few friends and have time for some thrilling heroics whilst liberating goods from stations / ships.

Don't get me wrong, they are doing a terrific job in really pushing the boundaries of PC gaming and space sims in general. It's just that the whole approach might end up doing more wrong than good, if they have to constantly tell people "we decided to scrap this", "this has been delayed", "we need to redo this feature from scratch because it currently sucks".

They alone have decided to do it via crowdfunding, and be extremely open with development while only having a vague idea on how demanding the "gamers" can be. In terms of the industry, all above mentioned issues are quite normal. Products get delayed, products get pushed from studio to studio and products fail (or get shipped in whatever form is deemed minimally viable). But usually there are not a million people asking every second "is it done? And now? How about now? Get it done already!".

If they fail, it could be the biggest blow to crowd funded projects ever and crowdfunding as a way of getting the impossible (or unlikely) done will be permanently mistrusted. Potentially it might mean that no project of this magnitude will ever get attempted via crowdfunding.

On the other hand, if they succeed: the creative spirit might finally triumph over merciless bean counting corporations and get put into the hands of the people (you know, the guys who actually end up using the final product!). It might pave a path to a new era of the gaming industry.
