I haven't heard any mention of this weapon being in game yet and thought I should suggest it due to it being often completely overlooked. This was probably the most common and least talked about mortar in use with British and other Commonwealth units in Normandy being issued at the platoon level. Despite this, there is actually a surprising lack of documentation about it in use, although photographic evidence shows it frequently enough.

Overall, British troops thought well of it and it was mostly used in a direct fire role, with a fairly limited maximum range of 500 yards, with an effective probably being much shorter. It would be an interesting option to have available at the squad level in the game and would probably be very helpful in improving the balance against the Brits that the MG-42 and 34s provide. It would prove to be extremely handy for rooting out dug in Germans in fixed positions as they will often be on most maps, as it was intended to do (and did splendidly) in real life.

Now adding a mortar into the game would be awesome, though it would be hard to get the system of firing it right. Like on arma 2 they have an artillery computer. Would be awesome to have a mortar team laying down fire on an enemy position.

I have forwarded it to our art dept and it will be worked on. Thanks for reminding me of the great weapon.

And yes troy, mortars will be ingame. Short range things like this though did not have much of a targeting system. The 2in, they didn't even bother with the optical sights, just ranged it in by gut feeling and observation by the crew.

Nice thing too, the german 50mm, though production stopped, was still used in Normandy enough to make a nice German counterpart to this one. :)

In essence, it would be a faster loading, longer ranged, slightly more powerful rifle grenade. Same logic in aiming, just guessing at the angles and eventually getting a feel for it.

I saw a photo of one of these 2 inch motors being used in Afghanistan/Iraq in the current occupation recently. I imagine it was being used for smoke/flares as it appeared to have had it's vents sealed.
Major R.H. Cain used the 2 inch mortar in direct fire and from the hip in Arnhem when winning his VC. Unlike larger mortars, this is possible because it has a kind of trigger that can be used instead of just dropping the round in.

Love the idea. And a Granatwerfer 34 as its German counterpart. And dont make it too easy to fire. The mortar crew should have to set the tube to certain coordinates on an x- and a y-dial. In a second camera mode the team can then see the impact area when the shell hits.....

This was so much fun... love to see TW using something similar...
